Celebration of the International Indigenous Peoples Day in Nepal

Celebration of the International Indigenous Peoples Day in Nepal

August 9 was declared as the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples in 1993 by The UN General Assembly. This day comes as a remarkable event since it marked the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations of the Sub-commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights.

Likewise, Nepalese Indigenous Peoples have been celebrating World’s Indigenous People’s Day on August 9th every year. NIWF, along with the Indigenous Peoples Film Forum, this year celebrated the special day with pomp and  exuberance. Not only were the streets of Kathmandu thronged with proud indigenous groups from both committees but we were also proud to celebrate Indigenous People’s day by sharing the cultures via dance performances, speeches, costume displays and delightful food and music. This event was taken place in the National Tourism Board, Putalisadak.
